Media ISP notetaking REPRESENTATION
- The Times- dominating image signifying the importance of the people physically on the cover. Donald Trump and Mike Pence
- Suit and ties giving the idea of wealth and power. Suits are associated with businessmen and have a high status
- They are both represented wearing an American flag as a badge, representing them as patriotic and associates them with American. This also links to the flag in the background adding to a sense of American-ism
- Trump has his fist in the air, represents him as successful and powerful, Pence is clapping towards Trump signifying that they should be pleased that Trump has won this election.
- Quote from trump “You will be so proud of your president, you will be so proud”, the repetition reinforces the sense of pride he has in his job and convince the audience that they will be happy with his performance.
- Headline at the front “The new world”, could be seen as either positive/negative. Reflecting the Times’ political standpoint of being centralist.
- Although the images and other headlines suggest a more positive representation, the headline and neutral itself “the new world” is up for more interpretation.
- The subheading says “Donald Trump sends shockwaves around the globe”. “Shockwaves”, connoting that Trump is extremely powerful, and dominant force. The shockwaves are more neutral and open to interpretation.
- The Chief Executive of Newscorp (The publisher behind The Times) is a Republican supporter and a friend of the Trump family.
- Murdoch’s affiliation with Trump might explain the representations on the Times cover as not ‘totally neutral’. – positive bias
- Target Audience for The Times- White, British, Male, Conservative audience, educated, middle to upper class, might identify with the ideas and attitudes of the target audience.
